Frequently Asked Questions

Starting therapy or reaching out for support can bring up a lot of questions, and that is completely normal. Whether you are exploring counseling for yourself, your child, your relationship, or simply trying to learn more about the process, we hope these answers help you feel more informed and at ease.

At Calvert + Associates, we believe support should feel thoughtful, collaborative, and personalized. Our team is here to help you better understand the process, explore your options, and find care that feels like the right fit for you or your family.

Beginning Therapy

Is therapy right for me? I’ve never talked to anyone. I’m used to handling things on my own.

Reaching out for support is not a sign of weakness, it is a sign of self awareness and strength. Everyone needs support at times, and therapy is simply a space to better understand what you are carrying and how to move forward.

At Calvert and Associates, our team works with you to identify your strengths, process what you are going through, and develop tools that help you feel more grounded, confident, and supported.

What’s the difference between talking to a therapist or my best friend or family?

Support from friends and family is incredibly valuable, but therapy offers something different. Our therapists and coaches are trained to help you understand patterns, build skills, and approach challenges in new ways.

We provide a space that is supportive, nonjudgmental, and confidential, where you do not have to worry about how your experience may affect someone else. This allows you to be fully open while receiving care that is grounded in training and experience.

Why shouldn’t I just take medication?

Medication can be helpful for some individuals, but it does not address everything on its own. Therapy focuses on understanding your experiences, developing coping strategies, and creating meaningful, lasting change.

For some, medication and therapy work best together. If that is something you are considering, we can help you explore what feels right for you.

What if I don't know what to talk about?

You do not need to come into therapy with everything figured out. Many people start therapy unsure where to begin. Your therapist will help guide the conversation and create space to explore what feels important at a pace that feels manageable.

What if I’ve tried therapy before and it didn’t help?

Not every therapy experience or therapist will feel like the right fit, and that can be discouraging. Different therapists bring different approaches, personalities, and areas of training. Sometimes finding the right fit can make a meaningful difference in how supported and understood you feel.

Do I need to be in a crisis to start therapy?

No. Therapy can be helpful during crisis, but it can also support personal growth, relationship challenges, stress, life transitions, grief, parenting, and feeling stuck.

Can therapy help if I'm not sure what is wrong?

Yes. You do not need to have the perfect words before starting. Therapy can help you better understand what you are feeling, what you need, and what next steps may be helpful.

What To Expect

How does therapy work? What should I expect in sessions?

Therapy is a collaborative process that is tailored to you. There is no one “right” way to do it.

Sessions may include conversation, reflection, skill building, and processing experiences at a pace that feels comfortable for you. You are always in control of what you choose to share, and we will meet you where you are.

How long does therapy take?

There is no set timeline for therapy. Each person’s experience, goals, and needs are different.

Some people come for a shorter period to work through a specific concern, while others engage in longer-term work for deeper growth. We will regularly check in with you to make sure your care continues to feel aligned with what you need.

I want to get the most out of therapy. What can I do?

You do not have to have everything figured out before you begin. Simply showing up is an important first step.

Our role is to support and guide you, but your willingness to engage, reflect, and apply what you are learning between sessions will help you get the most out of your experience.

What if I cry or become emotional during session?

Emotions are welcome in therapy. Crying, feeling overwhelmed, or struggling to find words are all normal parts of the process for many people. Our therapists are here to support you without judgment.

How often do people usually attend therapy?

Many clients begin therapy weekly, though the frequency may vary depending on your needs, goals, and schedule. Your therapist will work with you to determine what feels most supportive.

Is everything I share confidential?

Your privacy is very important to us. What you share in therapy is confidential, except in certain situations required by law or ethical guidelines, such as safety concerns, abuse, or risk of harm. Your therapist will review confidentiality with you during your first session and answer any questions you may have.

How will I know therapy is helping?

Progress in therapy can look different for each person and takes time. You may begin to notice more self awareness, healthier coping skills, improved relationships, or a greater ability to manage difficult emotions and situations.

Your therapist will check in with you along the way to make sure your work together continues to feel helpful and aligned with your goals.

Will I always feel better after each session?

Many people do feel relief after sessions, but therapy can also bring up emotions that take time to process. This is normal and does not mean you are doing anything wrong. Your therapist will move at a pace that feels supportive and will help you leave sessions feeling as grounded as possible.

What happens in the first session?

Your first session is a time to get to know your therapist, share what brings you in, and begin talking about your goals. You do not have to share everything right away. Your therapist will meet you where you are.

Finding The Right Fit

How do I choose the right therapist or coach?

Finding the right fit matters. You are welcome to explore our team and learn about each provider’s specialties. If you are unsure where to start, our team can help guide you toward someone who fits your needs and goals.

What if it doesn't feel like the right fit?

That is okay. Feeling comfortable and supported is an important part of the process. Our team includes many different therapists and coaches who bring different specialties, approaches, and areas of training. If something does not feel like the right fit, we would be happy to help you explore another provider within our team or connect you with a trusted referral if needed.

What is the difference between therapy and coaching?

Therapy often focuses on emotional healing, processing experiences, and supporting mental health. Coaching is more present and future focused, helping you set goals, build momentum, and create change in specific areas of your life.

How do I know if a therapist is a right fit?

A good fit often feels like being heard, respected, and supported. It can be helpful to notice whether you feel comfortable asking questions, sharing concerns, and moving at a pace that feels safe for you. It may take a few sessions to know, and that is okay. Our team is here to help you find the support that feels right for your needs.

Is it okay if it takes time to feel safe sharing?

Yes. Building trust and feeling emotionally safe can take time, especially if you have been hurt, misunderstood, or unsupported in past relationships or experiences.

Therapy is not about forcing vulnerability before you are ready. Your therapist will work with you at a pace that feels supportive and respectful.

Will my therapist tell me what to do?

Therapy is not about someone making decisions for you or taking control of your life. Our therapists are here to support, guide, and help you explore your thoughts, emotions, and options while respecting your values, goals, and autonomy.
