Child & Teen Counseling

Helping children and teens navigate life's challenges with confidence, connection, and support.

It Can Be Hard to Know What To Do

Watching your child struggle can feel overwhelming. Whether you are noticing anxiety, emotional outbursts, behavior changes, school difficulties, low self-esteem, or challenges related to family transitions, it can be difficult to know how to help.

At Calvert + Associates, we provide counseling for children and teens in a warm, supportive, and developmentally appropriate environment. Our goal is to help young people better understand their emotions, strengthen relationships, build healthy coping skills, and grow in confidence as they navigate life's challenges.

Behavior Challenges

Defiance, aggression, difficulty following directions, or changes in behavior at home or school.

Life Transitions & Trauma

Divorce, blended families, moves, grief, loss, adoption, other significant life changes or traumatic events.

Self-Esteem & Confidence

Negative self-talk, perfectionism, low confidence, or difficulty believing in themselves.

What Your Child's Behavior May Be Telling You

Children and teens do not always have the words to explain what they are feeling. Sometimes those struggles show up through behavior, emotional outbursts, withdrawal, anxiety, irritability, or challenges at school.

Rather than viewing these behaviors simply as problems to fix, we believe they are often important signals that a child may need additional support, understanding, or tools to navigate what they are experiencing.

Therapy provides a safe space for children and teens to process emotions, build resilience, strengthen relationships, and develop healthy ways of coping.

HOW WE HELP

Child Therapy

Child Therapy

Play is a child's natural language. Through play-based interventions, children can safely express emotions, process experiences, and develop important emotional and social skills.

Teen Counseling

Teen Counseling

Adolescence brings unique challenges. Teen counseling provides support for anxiety, stress, emotional regulation, self-esteem, relationships, and life transitions.

Parenting Support

Parenting Support

Parents play an important role in the counseling process. We work collaboratively with caregivers to provide guidance, support, and practical strategies that can help children thrive.

What Does Child/Teen Therapy Look Like?

Children communicate differently than adults. Depending on a child's age and needs, therapy may include play, art, games, storytelling, movement, and other developmentally appropriate activities.

For teens, therapy often involves conversation, skill building, emotional processing, and collaborative goal setting in a supportive and nonjudgmental environment.

Every child and teen is unique, and therapy is tailored to meet their individual needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Whether you're exploring counseling for the first time or simply wondering what to expect, we hope these answers provide clarity and reassurance as you consider support for your child.

How do we get started?

The first step is scheduling an appointment with one of our child or teen therapists. For younger children, the process often begins with an initial intake session with the parents or caregivers. This allows the therapist to learn about your child's strengths, concerns, developmental history, and goals before beginning individual sessions. For older teens, the first appointment may include both the teen and parent or may be scheduled directly with the teen, depending on their age, needs, and the therapist's clinical recommendation.

How do I know if my child may benefit from counseling?

Children and teens may benefit from counseling when emotions, behaviors, relationships, school functioning, or life transitions begin impacting their daily lives. You do not have to know exactly what is going on before reaching out. If something feels different or your child seems to be struggling, we are happy to help you determine whether counseling may be beneficial.

What happens during my child's sessions?

Every child is different, and therapy is tailored to meet their developmental needs. Younger children may engage through play, art, games, storytelling, or other creative activities, while older children and teens often participate through conversation, creative expression, skill building, and guided reflection. Our goal is to create a safe environment where children and teens feel comfortable expressing themselves and developing healthy coping skills.

Will I be involved in my child's therapy?

Parents and caregivers are an important part of the counseling process. Depending on your child's age and needs, your therapist may provide updates, schedule parent check-ins, offer recommendations, or include family sessions when appropriate. We also strive to create a safe and trusting space where children and teens feel comfortable sharing openly. Your therapist will discuss how parent involvement and confidentiality are approached based on your child's age and treatment goals.

What if my child is hesitant about therapy?

This is very common. Many children and teens feel unsure about therapy at first. Our therapists focus on building trust at your child's pace, never forcing them to talk or participate before they are ready. By respecting each child's comfort level and boundaries, we create a safe environment where meaningful connection and growth can happen naturally.

Do I stay during my child's appointment?

For clients 14 years old and younger, we strongly encourage a parent or legal guardian to remain on-site for the duration of the appointment. You are welcome to wait in our waiting room or in your vehicle. Remaining nearby allows us to reach you promptly if needed and helps ensure your child's safety throughout their visit.

How long does counseling usually last?

There is no set timeline for counseling. Every child, teen, and family is unique, and the length of therapy depends on each individual's needs and goals. Some children benefit from short-term support around a specific concern, while others find it helpful to continue counseling as they grow, navigate new developmental stages, and face new challenges. Throughout the process, your therapist will regularly check in to discuss progress, goals, and recommendations so that you can make informed decisions together.

How do I choose the right therapist for my child?

Our team includes therapists with different specialties, training, and approaches. If you are unsure where to begin, we are happy to help match your child with the therapist who we believe will be the best fit based on their age, concerns, personality, and goals.

What if I think my child needs counseling, but I could use support too?

Caring for a child who is struggling can be emotionally overwhelming, and parents often benefit from having support as well. If you are interested in counseling for yourself, couples counseling, or parenting support, we would be happy to help connect you with one of our therapists. We believe caring for the whole family can make a meaningful difference in a child's healing and growth.

What if I have more than one child who may benefit from counseling?

Many families have more than one child who could benefit from additional support, and we are here to help. Depending on each child's age, personality, and individual needs, we can help match each child with the therapist who is the best fit. Our goal is to support your family in a thoughtful and coordinated way while ensuring each child receives personalized care.
